5th Philippine-Korea Exchange Helps Brighten Streets and Improve Lives in the Villages through Solar Lamps

After providing 430 indoor solar lamps to five remote towns in Nueva Ecija, Philippines, GPFF Korea also distributed a total of 15 units of solar lamp posts to three villages during the 5th Philippine-Korea Global Peace Exchange on May 8-10, 2012. These outdoor solar lamp posts are currently helping brighten village streets at night while contributing in improving the lives of the families in the community.

personal transformation and ultimately peace.”

Mr. Young Kwan Kim, the CEO and owner of the manufacturing company of solar lamps in Korea was also one of the participants during the 5th Philippine-Korean Global Peace Leadership Exchange in Nueva Ecija. He was very much inspired to see that the solar lamps whom his company is producing are giving light, hope and life to the residents. In return, local leaders have pledged to support the sustainability of the program and residents declared to protect and take good care of all the solar lamps posts.

On May 8, 2012, thirty five Korean delegates from different chapters arrived in Nueva Ecija to organize the second stage of AllLights Village Project: brighten not only the homes but also the entire villages starting with the streets.

To make this plan possible, Seoul City Chapter donated 5 units of solar lamp posts to the Alllights Village in Sitio Sinipit, Barangay Santolan, Palayan City; Pusan City Chapter donated 5 units to the Alllights Village in Sitio Karugang, Barangay Bugnan, Gabaldon; and, other provincial chapters donated 5 units to the Alllights Village in Sitio Camias, Barangay San Juan, Laur, Nueva Ecija.

“The areas where the lamp posts were placed served as a gathering venue for the residents at night.  We gather every night to plan for tomorrow’s activities, we gather to celebrate this blessing we received in the community,” said Federico Baltazar, leader of Sitio Sinipit in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija. “We agreed that May 10 should become an annual celebration in the community for AllLights Project,” he added.

More ecstatic in these developments are the women in the community. Aside from solar lamp posts in the streets, having a solar lamp at home had helped not only their children’s study habits but also their family income allotment.

“The cost we usually spend for gasoline, are now being used to buy other household needs or we save it for our children’s education,” shared Noemi Santos, mother of three.

Afar from distributing solar lanterns, Korean delegates and Filipino beneficiaries had a tree planting activity together in which they named the trees as “dream trees.” Children in the village participated by writing their dreams in a piece of cloth and tied it on each tree. As the trees grow, the children will be reminded of achieving those dreams and dreaming big.

Global Peace Leadership Exchange is one of the many cultural exchange programs of GPFF geared towards the vision of creating “One Family under God.” In his speech during the Global Peace Convention 2010 in Nairobi Kenya, GPFF Founder Dr. Hyun Jin Moon emphasized that, “serving together in common cause breaks down barriers that exist between peoples in conflict, and can be a powerful instrument for cultural exchange, understanding,
