GPFF Philippines co-organizes Global Youth Summit 2012 to tap

Youth Power for Innovative Solutions

Rallying for national development starting with the local communities, 1000 college student leaders seek and propose feasible solutions on health and education at the recently concluded Global Youth Summit (GYS) 2012 at SM North EDSA Skydome in Quezon City, Philippines.

"Faced with formidable challenges today, we need radical change," Dr. Nona Ricafort, commissioner of Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and supporter of GPFF, reminded the young delegates on Friday. "We are rapidly becoming global citizens required to develop a global mindset, so let us meet the challenges at hand as we prepare our people and ourselves for this opportunity," she concluded.

There were two case challenges on health and education. Philippine Health Insurance Co. (PhilHealth), the national provider for health insurance program, tapped the student leaders on the challenge of engaging the missing 15% of population that are not enrolled and do not have substantial access to PhilHealth benefits. On the other hand, Department of Education (DepEd), responsible for regulating and managing the Philippine system of basic education, commissioned the youth leaders on the challenge of ‘Basic Education for All.’

To help the young leaders “Design” their project ideas, ECCI Group Social Enterprises Manager Olga Babina, Geiser-Maclang Marketing Communications Co-Founder Brad Geiser, Reyes Barbeque CEO Carolina Reyes; and, UNILEVER Vice President for Corporate Affairs Engr. Chito Macapagal shared relevant knowledge and success stories on communicating and upscaling ideas, project management and project sustainability.

Global Shapers Miguel Bermundo, founder of Dream Big Pilipinas; and, Philippine’s youngest mayor, Pie Alvarez of San Vicente Palawan conferred their personal challenges and achievements as young global leaders in their own fields. On the same block, “Develop”, Armand del Rosario of Kaya Futbol Club cited an inspiring story on engaging the street children of Tondo in sports activities through Gawad Kalinga’s “Field of Dreams.”

Author and entrepreneur, Michael Lobrin, and TV personality, musician and educator Jim Paredes completed the sessions by encouraging the students to “Deliver” their passion and skills by becoming responsive leaders with focus and vision. The delegates have been active throughout the sessions and even in social media participation wherein #GYS2012 consistently trended for 7 hours in the Philippines via Twitter.

Being up for the challenge, youth groups then presented their project ideas on both tracks – health and education. Sample proposals include “Oplan Container Van” which will utilize container vans as classrooms; and, the integration of medical insurance among cooperative members who are not yet members of PhilHealth. With further evaluation, the winning teams will be announced later this year and will be given support by AIESEC, SM Cares and GPFF to implement their quality proposals to the communities.

In his message, Dr. Michael Zablan of GPFF Philippines reminded the students on becoming “moral and innovative leaders” for the present and future generation.

“Moral and effective leadership is not defined by one's religion, nationality, ideology or even political affiliation; as good leadership is determined by the principles and values by which one lives,” Dr. Zablan quoted GPFF Chairman Dr. Hyun Jin Moon after the latter’s video message (an excerpt on his speech about Moral and Innovative Leadership) was shown to all the delegates and guests present at the summit. “While I believe that most, if not all of you, had started to experience the challenges of leadership and responsibility at such a young age, may today’s summit shed another light to your perspectives as young leaders as you learn new culture and set of values,” he added.

A joint project of AIESEC in the Philippines, the world’s largest student-run organization, SM Cares’ Youth and Children’s Welfare Program, Commission on Higher Education (CHED), National Youth Commission (NYC), Global Peace Festival Foundation (GPFF) and Global Peace Youth Corps (GPYC), the summit gathered young leaders from different regions in the Philippines and countries as far as Germany, Poland, Japan, Korea and Russia.

This year’s theme, “Design, Develop and Deliver (3D),” aims to upscale the summit by guiding the delegates on campaign creation, upscaling ideas, project management and getting support and partnerships. Moreover, the student leaders participated on case challenges to address and provide solutions to certain issues. Motivational speakers also shared their part to encourage the delegates to become leaders with global mindset.
